  73.               in memory, including data located on RAM disks.

  76.      You  will  find  this  program  useful, not only in identifying an
  77.      existing fault but also as part of a periodic maintenance program.
  78.      This  program  has  been  developed  as  an exhaustive test of the
  79.      memory in a PC, XT, AT  or any  of their  clones. It  is much more
  80.      comprehensive than  the Power On Self Test and delivers diagnostic
  81.      messages which are  much  easier  to  understand.  In  addition to
  82.      system or  base memory,  RamTest will also test Expanded Memory on
  83.      all machines and Extended Memory on AT type machines.

  86.                               RUNNING RAMTEST

  89.              WE SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT RUN ANY OTHER PROGRAM      
  90.        (including memory resident programs) while using RamTest.

  93.      To start the program place the disk in the default drive and type:
  94.  
  95.                RAMTEST [Enter]
  96.  
  97.      The test is best run from a floppy  disk which  has been formatted
  98.      using the  /S option  from IBM or MS DOS ver 3.1 or lower (so that
  99.      you  can  boot  directly  from  it)  and  contains   no  RAM-based
  100.      utilities. Many  commonly used RAM resident programs and utilities
  101.      "take command" of portions of the system and may cause  RamTest to
  102.      crash.  AN  IMPORTANT  EXCEPTION  to  this  is if your system uses
  103.      Expanded Memory, you MUST  then have  the Expanded  Memory Manager
  104.      included in your CONFIG.SYS file in order to test Expanded Memory.
  105.  
  106.      When RamTest  first starts,  it computes  the Relative Performance
  107.      Index. This number approximates the factor by which the computer's
  108.      performance exceeds  that of  a 4.77MHz 8088. The number generated
  109.      will probably be different than that generated on the same machine
  110.      by the  Norton Utilities. The difference arises from the different
  111.      methods used to compute the processor speed.
  112.  
  113.      After the startup command is executed, the program  determines the
  114.      RAM configuration of your system and displays the RamTest menus.

  126.                           TOP-LINE PULL-DOWN MENUS
  127.  
  128.      All RamTest options can be specified in the RamTest Top-Line Menus
  129.  
  130.           C    If you  can tell the program what size memory chips your
  131.                computer has,  then  the  diagnostics  can be  even more
  132.                precise as to the location of any errors.
  133.  
  134.           E    Cycles the echo option  through  the  possible settings.
  135.                This  option causes RamTest to echo error  messages to a
  136.                printer or other output device.  In this mode, the error
  137.                message  will be  output to the  indicated port and then
  138.                testing will continue  without pause.  Allowable choices
  139.                for ECHO are COM1, COM2, LPT1, LPT2 and DISK. If COM1 or
  140.                COM2 is chosen, the baud  rate  parameters  must  be set
  141.                using the DOS MODE command prior to running RamTest. For
  142.                example, to run RamTest with the error messages going to
  143.                a printer  at 9600  baud, use  the following sequence of
  144.                commands:

  146.                     MODE COM1 9600
  147.                     RAMTEST COM1
  148.  
  149.                ***  Note that you may also specify the required port as
  150.                     a command line parameter.
  151.                If DISK is specified, then have a blank formatted floppy
  152.                in Drive A before beginning the test.

  154.           O    Toggles "Quit and Continue On Error".
  155.  
  156.           P    The  P  option  disables   parity  checking   for  Eagle
  157.                computers and  other machines without parity checked RAM
  158.                and also to merely  disable checking  of the  RAM chips.
  159.                This  option  should  also  be used with computers which
  160.                have  parity  detection  circuitry  which  is noticeably
  161.                different  from   IBM  (PC   Limited  and  other  clones
  162.                included).  If  RamTest  consistently  indicates  parity
  163.                errors in  a computer which does not fail otherwise, you
  164.                should use the P option.
  165.  
  166.           R    Report from DISK to Printer, if ECHO DISK  was selected.
  167.  
  168.           S    Toggles "Sound on Error".
  169.  
  170.           T    RepeaT.  Sets the number of times a test or set of tests
  171.                will  execute.  Range is  1 to  65535,  with  0  meaning
  172.                continuous.  Pressing Esc during testing  will cause the
  173.                program to halt at the end of the current cycle.

  176.      As  with  all  Brown  Bag  products,  pressing  the  F1 key brings
  177.      context-sensitive  help.  Pressing  the  Esc  key  terminates  the
  178.      program.

  189.                               TYPES OF MEMORY
  190.  
  191.      The  difference  between  base,  expanded  and  extended memory is
  192.      fairly simple. Base Memory is that computer memory  below the 640k
  193.      DOS limit.  This is  generally where  programs are loaded and run.
  194.      Expanded Memory is memory which is contained on an expansion board
  195.      which  conforms   to  the  Lotus-Intel-Microsoft  Expanded  Memory
  196.      Specification (EMS). It can  actually  be  many  megabytes  but is
  197.      accessed in  16k chunks  which are  mapped into an unused space in
  198.      memory, often  segment D000.  Extended Memory  is only  used on AT
  199.      type  computers  and  is  related  to  the 80286 protected mode of
  200.      operation.

  202.                                THE TEST MENU
  203.  
  204.      This menu allows  you  to choose  any  combination  of  the memory
  205.      sections of  your computer for testing.  Each menu item is related
  206.      to one  or more types  of  memory  but  they appear  only  if your
  207.      particular  machine  has  the  type  of  memory  in  question. The
  208.      complete menu (seen only on an AT type system) is:

  219.      If your  machine does  not have  Expanded or  Extended Memory, you

  234.      NOTE: In  order to  detect and  test Expanded Memory, the Expanded
  235.      Memory Manager required for your system must be installed, usually
  236.      as a  device driver  in the  CONFIG.SYS file. Once base memory has
  237.      been tested, the Expanded Memory Manager no longer exists  and the
  238.      its menu items will not appear. Moral: Test Expanded Memory first.

  250.      Further information can then be obtained regarding any of the menu
  251.      choices. Press Esc to return to the Test Menu.

  254.      THE OPTIONS
  255.  
  256.      Base Memory
  257.  
  258.      Tests Base Memory. In  the process  all device  drivers, interrupt
  259.      handlers, RAM  disks, spoolers and DOS itself will be erased. Once
  260.      Base Memory has been tested, therefore, the program  cannot return
  261.      you to  DOS without rebooting. This will happen automatically when
  262.      you <Esc> to exit. It is possible that  an intermittent problem in
  263.      Base Memory could cause  the test program itself to crash. Even in
  264.      such a case repeated runs should identify the problem.
  265.  
  266.      Expanded Memory
  267.  
  268.      Expanded Memory can only be tested if base memory has not yet been
  269.      tested and  the Expanded Memory Manager has been loaded. Any board
  270.      which conforms to the Lotus-Intel-Microsoft EMS can be tested.

  272.      Extended Memory
  273.  
  274.      Extended Memory only  appears  on  AT  type  systems.  No software
  275.      driver is  required but  the SETUP  program must  have been run to
  276.      tell the system that extended memory exists.

  278.      TO START TESTING:
  279.  
  280.      Cursor to the desired section and press <Enter>.
  281.  
  282.      DIAGNOSTICS
  283.  
  284.      Should a memory error be detected,  the  test  will  stop  and the
  285.      diagnostic  message(s)  displayed.  In  most  cases,  the  failing
  286.      address will be  displayed  and  the  row  of  memory  causing the
  287.      failure will be identified. The bad row is identified in more than
  288.      one way so that most users can pinpoint the failure.  On the lines
  289.      that  follow,  the  bad  data  bits are pointed out by bit number.
  290.      Using the row  number,  bit  information  and  your manufacturer's
  291.      documentation, you should be able to locate the offending chip and
  292.      replace it. If you have specified  the size  of your  memory chips
  293.      then even more specific details are given. 
  294.      In the  event of  a parity  error, only the offending row of chips
  295.      will be identified. Again, using the  manufacturer's documentation
  296.      you should be able to identify the parity chip and replace it.
  297.  
  298.      If more  than one  bit is declared bad, or if the problem persists
  299.      after replacing  chips, the  problem with  the system  may be more
  300.      than just bad RAM chips. In this situation, you might want to take
  301.      the machine to a qualified service facility.
